Mike Gordon - The Green Sparrow

Those insatiable Phish fans will find something to groove to in the solo debut album from the band's former bassist Mike Gordon. Gordon has worked on various projects since Phish split, but he spent more than a year on this debut.

As one might expect, there's a loose, improvisational feel to a lot of the set but it does have its moments, specifically the organ powered "Dig Further Down," the tasty, acoustic-textured "Andelmans' Yard," and "Travel Too Far," a cut which features Gordon's former Phish-mates Trey Anastasio and Page McConnell along with Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann, keyboardist extraordinaire Chuck Leavell and others.

But despite the complex rhythmic interplay of "Morphing Again," and overall some fine musicianship, there's an overall feel to the disc that's lazy, loose, predictable and rarely invigorating.
